Name: Heather W.
Title: Tutor/Coach

Hello! My name is Heather Woods. I was born and raised in sunny San Diego in the city of El Cajon. I am the youngest child of seven and am an aunt to six wonderful children who some of which are now adults! I love working with youth because I always enjoy working and collaborating with others who inspire me to think outside the box and see the world differently. Reading and education are so important and significant in my life and I love to inspire others to feel the same way. Education is so important for the future so I believe there is no better place to start inspiration than with the mentoring of a young mind. When I am not enjoying a good book or working on schoolwork, I thoroughly enjoy going to the beach or zoo, playing with my dog, or working on my garden!
Education: I graduated from Valhalla High School in 2010 and I currently attend Grossmont College with hopes of transferring to UCSD within the next year. Overall, I plan to obtain a Master’s degree in Child Development with a focus in autism studies.
Experience: I began tutoring and mentoring peers in school at a very young age. Through the GATE program in elementary school, I was given the opportunity to help my peers with their schoolwork. I continued to be a peer tutor through grade school, all the way up until my senior year. In high school, I worked exclusively with children with special needs and primarily those with autism and Down syndrome. I would attend classes with the students and we would then work together on their homework and I would assist them to learn the subject matter in a way that could be relevant to their lives. I find working with children extremely rewarding and fulfilling to my life calling. The joy on their faces when they understand something that once before was difficult makes me feels so grateful to be in my line of work and is extremely relevant to my work with Club Xcite.
Hobbies & Skills: When I am not enjoying a good book or working on schoolwork, I thoroughly enjoy going to the beach or zoo, playing with my dog, or working on my garden. I have a vegetable and fruit garden, as well as a few beautiful flower beds, so there is always work to do in the yard! Family is also very important to me so I like to spend as much time as I can with my family; we enjoy bowling, swimming, going to museums in Balboa Park, or the San Diego County Fair in summertime. I also have a very strong love for all kinds of music, old and new, and I love attending live music. I am always trying to find fun new ways to teach educational material!
Why ClubXcite? I chose Club Xcite because their mission statement really spoke to my beliefs towards teaching education. I believe our enrichment, 1-1 and other programs are very important and influential for young minds. Children are our future and I believe it is our job to help them succeed and to feel confident about their success at a young age; Club Xcite helps tremendously to make this a reality.
