San Diego Summer School

Mentors in San Diego Learning Disabilities

Article by: Stefan Hochfilzer (ClubXcite Founder)

Throughout the years I have worked with many children from normal kids to kids with ADD, and Autism. One thing that I have noticed is that in order for a child to improve performance he or she has to personally see the benefit or the reward in doing so. Just like adults, children are motivated by incentives. Why do we get up in the morning and go to work? If we wouldn’t get a paycheck every two weeks would you still be motivated to work? Most likely the answer would be no. Children see homework and schoolwork as unpleasant task that they only do because there teachers and parents make them. Parents have a hard time stepping out of their parent role and making homework enjoyable, but a young third person can easily find ways to motivate children and provide fun incentives after they have finished their work.

When children come home from school they need to get their homework done. Many children with or without learning disabilities may not have the self-discipline or the motivation to sit down and finish their work by themselves. Most of time parents struggle day to day to make sure their child gets his or her homework done so that they can perform well in school. Parents usually spend a couple hours trying to get their child focused and parents with special needs it may take up to 3 hours to finish simple tasks. Children are less cooperative when working with their parents to follow directions. This is due to the fact that parents make all the rules for them and usually parents take away privileges when rules are broken. Children usually just want to be left alone by their parents and make comments like: “Ya, Whatever”, “I’ll do it myself”, “Don’t worry, I’ll figure it out”, “You don’t understand”. It is very hard for parents to step out of the parent role when working with their children on homework or other tasks that children do not see as fun or entertaining.

Involving a younger third person who can relate to a child better and who does not make all the rules is extremely effective when working with children to improve performance either academically, athletically or socially. Many parents tell me that it took them 2 hours to work through the homework with their child and that with the mentor they get it done in 30 minutes. They are amazed. The reason is because the child has a young, fun and energetic role model that is helping him or her with the homework and making it fun and exciting. There is always some incentive after the homework gets done such as playing outside sports or involving them in fun activities. When a mentor tells a child to get focused and to get through the problem at hand a child is not likely to be resistant knowing that the mentor is his friend rather than his boss.

It is very important for a child to have a good balance in academic, athletic and social development. Through the TV, computer and videogames the athletic and social interaction has been lost in many cases. Parents sometimes tend to let their children zone out in front of these devises to get some peace and quit, but it is the worst thing for your child. Children need to get back in touch with outdoor activities and playing with neighbors and friends. This is another great task for a mentor, who after he helps them with their homework takes your child outside and away from the TV and computer. Mentors take children to the park, the beach, and the recreation centers which keep them out of trouble and help them stay healthy and happy.

Children these days are affected by the media and friends so much that they get into bad habits or other dangerous activities such as drinking, drugs and sexual activity. Children often do not feel comfortable talking to their parents about these situations and they don’t know who to talk to. They do want to get advice from someone and they usually end up asking other friends who lead them in the wrong direction. Having a mentor involved in your child’s life gives them the opportunity to ask an older more responsible person for advice and not be lead down the wrong path. Mentors will always let parents know if any harmful or dangerous tendencies arise and therefore parents can step in.

Having a mentor involved in your child’s life not only helps your child with his academic, athletic and social development but it also helps parents feel safer and less stressed out about there child’s future.

What is ClubXcite?

Xcite! is dedicated to providing opportunities for individuals to grow as athletes, students, and friends. The “Xcite! Way” is the philosophy that an enjoyable teaching style translates to accelerated learning and unmatched performance. With a fun, non-competitive, and encouraging environment, motivated and well-rounded students are created who reach their utmost potential.

Personal growth
Xcite! programs offer a way for children to gain valuable social and team working skills. The “Xcite! Way” inspires students to think positively and encourages self-motivation. Instructors identify student’s strengths and weaknesses so that participants can effectively utilize natural talent while developing weaker areas. Our approach helps students become well rounded and motivated individuals.

Making friends
Sports teams and other extracurricular programs provide for a healthy environment in which students can make friends with individuals in the same community. It is our goal to provide students with a strong foundation so that they feel comfortable interacting with their new neighborhood friends both in and outside of the Xcite! program. Xcite! encourages its participants to form ad hoc teams or practice sessions so that they may build upon the skills that Xcite! has taught them.

Family oriented
Xcite! realizes the importance of building a strong family network throughout the community. Upon creating an environment where families are involved in the children’s successes and achievements, Xcite! strives to create a united and spirited community.

Investing in your child’s future
Our mentors understand what it takes to optimize performance. It is our desire for children to take the skills learned at Xcite! and translate them into measurable successes. Whether it be joining a high school team, or gaining a college scholarship, Xcite! mentors individuals who desire to be top performers.

I encourage you to contact me personally if you would like more information on customizing a program to match your child's needs.
